WALTHAM Claim to Fame: Sarah won first place (and a $1,000 savings bond), in Historic Waltham Inc.'s essay contest, "Waltham's History, the Nation's History," in the middle school division.
In her essay on the Waltham Watch Factory, Smith outlines its history, noting that the factory was "the pioneer of watchmaking in America," and prompted other industrialists to create watch factories throughout the country.
Why the Watch Factory?: "My older sister, Hannah, entered the contest two years ago (and earned second place). I thought it would be fun to learn more about Waltham's history," said Smith.
Most interesting fact Sarah Smith learned about Waltham through his research: "I read about the Waltham Watch Factory and learned it was a big part of the Industrial Revolution and was known across the world, and will always be known. I thought it was cool I was living in a town that's famous across America," she said.
The best part about winning the essay contest: "It was surprising and exciting," Sarah said.
Beating her sister wasn't bad, either, she joked. "It felt pretty good," she said, giggling.
